BROADCAST PIONEERS OF INDIANA
Broadcast Pioneers Website Click Here http://www.indianabrodcastpioneers.com A Society of broadcast professionals contributing to the past, present and future of broadcasting. An Introduction to the Broadcast Pioneers of Indiana In 1942, NBC gave a dinner to honor Dr. H. V. Kaltenborn's 20th year on the air. Dr. Kaltenborn felt there should be an association of radio pioneers and took the initiative in forming "The Twenty Year Club." In 1947, the club was reorganized as "The Radio Pioneers Club" with a constitution and by-laws. In 1957, in order to encompass all branches of the industry, the organization's name was changed to Broadcast Pioneers. The membership includes pioneers in all sections of the industry; legal, programming, artists, owners and managers, public relations and publicity, advertising, engineering, finance and government. Anyone who has made a significant contribution to the broadcast industry, or was closely associated with it in an allied field, is eligible for membership in the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers. Dues are $40.00 per year for those who are active full time in the industry, or $30.00 per year for those who are retired. The Constitution specifies that the purposes of the organization are: "To establish a membership organization of persons who, by their long years of service in the broadcast industry, desire to become members for the purposes of friendship, education, public service, and the preservation of broadcast history." The constitution is broad enough to enable the Broadcast Pioneers of Indiana to undertake almost any task which the membership feels will benefit the industry. 1981 marked the establishment of an Indiana Broadcast Hall of Fame in which men and women whose contributions to the industry have been deemed worthy enough to be recipients of this honor. Inductees to the Hall of Fame are selected on an annual basis, according to the constitution of the organization. The Pioneers Foundation has established a permanent exhibit at the Indiana State Museum which includes the names and career background of all Hall of Fame inductees. This exhibit is a state-of-the-art video display in which visitors may simply touch a screen to call up the background of an honoree. Artifacts from Indiana broadcast history are displayed and audio and video recordings are an important part of this exhibit. This exhibit is in keeping with the mission of the Broadcast Foundation which is…"To collect, preserve, and disseminate the history of broadcasting in Indiana in a variety of educational forums." The Foundation is continually seeking artifacts, memorabilia, oral histories and other anecdotal information about Indiana broadcasting. Whenever possible, the Foundation will support internships, scholarships, and the funding for scholars to write a history of broadcasting and its impact. Several years ago the Foundation authorized the firm of Weintraut & Nolan to conduct oral history interviews with a number of broadcast pioneers in Indiana. The final product included approximately 110 hours of interviews, as well as an illustrated history of the participants. This resulted in the publishing of a book by the Indiana Historical Society, "In the Public Interest." The book is available at the Society as well as at the Indiana State Museum. The Indiana Broadcast Pioneers hold quarterly meetings and any Indiana broadcast veteran is welcome to its membership. Contact the offices of The Indiana Broadcasters Association for a membership application. |
