Job Description

Have you ever considered utilizing your accounting skills to support local public media? If so, we’d love to talk to you. PBS Michiana-WNIT in South Bend, IN is actively seeking a part time Chief Financial Officer. You’ll perform the full spectrum of financial and cost accounting operations of a small department for a 501(c)3 corporation.

You’ll be responsible for day-to-day finance and accounting operations including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, billing, cash receipts, check runs, forecasting, budgeting, fixed asset activity, audit preparation/coordination and other related functions. You’ll prepare specialized reports including the annual SABS (Station Activity Benchmark Study) Report for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, New Market Tax Credit filings, and other specialized transactions.

You’ll report to the President/General Manager, but will also be the liaison with the board Treasurer and the Budget, Finance & Audit Committee. You may supervise an assistant.

Responsibilities Include:
• Monitor daily cash balances, prepare cash flow forecasting.
• Manage daily operations of outside accounting service and accounting firm.
• Conform to standards and prepare required reports for Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) including the Annual Financial Report (AFR) Station Activity Benchmarking Survey (SABS), and Station Activity Survey (SAS).
• Review required Federal and State tax reports.
• Review Federal Form 990.
• Create month-end and annual financial reports or statements to report financial status of organization.
• Review monthly payments to vendors, manage payables.
• Review accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, bank deposits.
• Review payroll.
• Review general ledger.
• Track deferred revenue.
• Prepare annual budget and monitor monthly revenue and expenditure variances.
• Review the recording/amortization of capital assets.
• Prepare Capital Budgets in collaboration with management.
• Vigilantly monitor and enforce proper accounting methods, policies, principles and controls.
• Monitor and coordinate the revenue and expense activities of all departments. Track projects.
• Maintain and track grant activities, providing required reporting and documentation.
• Alert top management to variances, trends, and issues. Recommend corrective actions.
• Improve systems, procedures and controls.
• Work consultatively with departments on cost reduction initiatives.
• Maintain banking relationships, including the arrangement of adequate lines-of-credit to bridge any cash flow issues and to provide for capital investments or investments into new revenue opportunities.
• Maintain and safely back-up fiscal files and records to document transactions.
• Present reports and make presentations to management and the board.
• Supervise any staff assigned.
• Other duties as assigned.

Classification: Part time, Non-Exempt.

Required Skills

Required Qualifications:
• High attention to detail
• Strong communication skills and ability to interact collaboratively at all levels, including board members
• Highly motivated self-starter able to work independently without additional support

Skills and Experience:
• Proven knowledge of accounting principles, practices, standards, laws and regulations
• Advanced computer skills on MS Office, accounting software and databases
• 5+ years accounting experience
• Risk assessment skills
• Strategic skills
• Strong ethics
• Experience with a non-profit organization

Education Required

Education: BS degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA desirable
