Scott Wheeler has been a fixture in broadcasting for more than 50 years and has been a part of more than 10 different radio stations in Indianapolis alone. He’s been a program director, music director, production director and an on-air personality for some of the city’s most influential stations including WIFE, WNDE, WENS, WZPL, WHHH and WYXB.
His versatility and programming instincts helped shape successful formats in Indianapolis and it all began with a simple fascination with the air waves. At just 12 years old, he started listening to Top 40, collecting records, and “coding” them.
The pre-teen who remembers gazing through the giant “window on the world” as Jay Reynolds did afternoons on WIFE, would just a few years later be on the air in that studio himself.
At the age of 16 (and even before he got his driver’s license), Scott obtained an FCC license, allowing him to take transmitter readings. This allowed him to work on-air in commercial radio while still in high school.
Wheeler has worked in nearly every genre from top 40, rock 40, rhythmic top 40, AC, hot AC, album rock, all 80s, all 90s, classic hip hop, classic hits, country, and even news. Over the years, he’s worked not only in Indianapolis, but in Evansville, and even for Hawaii radio –where he has programmed various formats and done afternoons on stations in Honolulu and Maui.
He has interacted with dozens of musical giants over the years but Paul McCartney and Keith Richards stand out. Wheeler once asked candidate Hilary Clinton about her time as a Republican, which she handled gracefully, and somehow caused Barbra Streisand to have a “diva moment” during an interview.
In addition to his radio work, Wheeler maintains a busy voiceover career with global clients, including The Vatican, Canadian Railways, the Kingdom of Qatar, Gulfstream Aviation, and many others.
