But it’s more than just rolling up your banner and spreading out a table drape. The FCC also encourages stations to build exposure in other ways, including promoting participation in an event of this type “on-air” – using the very medium that attracts advertisers and buyers.
IBA’s Spring Career Fair is intentionally scheduled to coincide with the spring Awards Luncheon of the Indiana Association School Broadcasters (IASB.) Indiana is truly fortunate to have a separate group that encourages the art of broadcasting in high schools and colleges, and the award winners at the annual luncheon are the “cream of the crop” for Indiana students – and future station employees.
That’s why we make a substantial investment to offset the costs for students and parents. We also use this event to publicly award more than $50,000 in Indiana Broadcasters Foundation scholarships to broadcasting students who are studying at Indiana schools (another effort encouraged by the FCC as a wise investment by stations to promote equal employment.)
We’ve moved the event to a high-profile sports venue – the practice facility of the Indianapolis Colts, responding to feedback that both job seekers and stations want a location that speaks to the advantages of broadcasting (and free parking, of course.)
“Year after year, feedback from our participating stations points to a desire to see a growing number of potential applicants. The keys to success, here, are in your hands. We ask stations to run the promotional announcement about the Career Fair in advance of the event. We can provide scripts if you want to produce your own version, but we also invest in professional radio and TV commercials that make it easy for stations to use. We also ask stations to come early to attend the luncheon and tp learn who is winning awards and why. These are likely the best prospects for your openings. We also ask stations to make certain that their current job postings are listed on the IBA website, since that is how job seekers find out about opportunities,” said IBA Executive Director Dave Arland.
Thanks to the members who have already made plans to exhibit (the cost is nominal: $50 per table) at the Career Fair, and IBA looks forward to hearing and seeing your commercials for the event, your postings online, and your attendance at the full day of activity that begins with the IASB Awards Luncheon and continues through the conclusion of the Career Fair on March 29.
